Bloomfield Stevens is a Brockville Ontario Company specializing in quality hand crafted exterior deck and grounds furniture. We manufacture most common deck and grounds furniture items, special order requests and small landscaping structures. Our furniture and structures are intended to enhance property aesthetics, your personal or business projection, convenience and comfort.
All materials are purchased locally. We strive to design and manufacture furniture and structures for maximum strength and durability. All furniture pieces are constructed from rough dimension lumber which permits us to expand finish dimensions ensuring additional strength in joints and furniture members, and greater durability. Joints and joinery fastenings use butt, lapped, mortise and tenon, dowelled, etc. methods, both glued and screwed. Exposed furniture fasteners are brass or rust proofed, to avoid rust damage and staining. The furniture being intended for outdoor use, we use cedar exclusively, for aesthetics, durability and longest term use.
Finishing options are stains of various semi-transparent or solid colors for protection from sun damage. We do not recommend paint unless it is for effect as this will negate the natural beauty of the cedar wood, finish durability and refinishing techniques. Furniture pieces are available unfinished at a reduced rate should you prefer a natural finish, or to finish at your convenience.
About cedar wood construction:
Cedar is a lightweight and dimensionally stable wood that lies flat and stays straight, which means it resists the natural tendency to crack and check as you might find in many other wood species. Its distinct cell structure discourages moisture rot by allowing it to dry out faster than outdoor furniture made from most other woods.
Cedar is incredibly thermal coefficient, meaning even on hot days, it is cool to sit on. Its bacterial and fungal resistance coupled with the fact that Cedar is 80% the strength of Oak, makes it the most desirable wood to use for building outdoor furniture.
Cedar fibers contain oils that act as natural preservatives to help the wood resist rot and decay making it an excellent outdoor furniture material. Among other things these naturally occurring organic compounds give off that distinct aroma that is pleasant to humans, but a deterrent to insects, moths and other wood pests.
It is important to remember wood finishes are not of a permanent nature. Infrequent refinishing will be required at some time. Of course, all of the above is moot should your prefer the natural look of aged wood. Cedar is excellent for this purpose. The important thing to remember always, though, is to ensure the wood has the opportunity to dry as quickly as possible after being saturated and is not allowed to sit in wet snow / permanent wet ground / standing water.
Of indirect interest, you will observe cedar rail fencing throughout the countryside. These rails will be 100 to 150 years old, on average.
